A Lifetime of Smiles Starts with a Good Foundation
Healthy smiles are an important part of your child’s development throughout their teenage years and into adulthood, but it’s not always easy to juggle a busy family lifestyle. Between work, school, and everything else, sometimes it feels like you can’t catch a break.
We want your trips to the dentist to be as smooth and effortless as possible. We’re happy to accommodate your busy family with flexible hours and appointments that are grouped together.
As your child grows up, they will pass many dental care milestones, including their first appointment, losing their baby teeth, getting their adult teeth, and one day coming to the dentist by themselves to continue their routine dental care. We can’t wait to be there for each new step.

Generally, we want to see how your whole mouth looks and functions. Before we plan your treatment we want to know everything about the health and aesthetic of your smile, and most importantly, what you want to achieve so we can help you get there.
Frequently Asked Questions
Your child will start to get their first teeth around 6 months of age. It is recommended that children visit the dentist by the age of 1 or within 6 months of getting their first tooth. If you suspect something might be wrong or your child is experiencing discomfort or pain, please book an appointment as soon as possible. It’s never too late for a child to have their first dental appointment.
Baby teeth are just as important as adult teeth. Parents should understand that baby teeth do much more than hold space in the jaws for permanent teeth. Children’s teeth can permanently affect how their face looks, how they smile, and how often they smile. Children who develop confidence and smile freely in their early years tend to keep those habits. Dental pain, even mild pain that children learn to normalize, will have a lasting negative impact on children’s eating habits, including how they chew, what foods they prefer, and how much food they eat.
The length of the appointment depends on the needs of the child and how cooperative they are during the exam. That being said, an appointment typically lasts about one hour. We’d be happy to have your child to our Dundas clinic for their first dental appointment!
Your toddler, child, or teen should come to the dentist as frequently as you do. We recommend a checkup and cleaning every 6 months unless otherwise specified. If your child experiences a tooth or jaw ache, rubs or nurses their jaw a lot, or avoids hard or cold foods, please book an appointment sooner.
A cavity is a hole in the tooth that gets bigger over time. A cavity may or may not cause pain or sensitivity. It’s important to repair cavities with a tooth filling before they become more serious or lead to infection, even in baby teeth. Cavities are caused by bacteria and dental plaque and are worsened by sugary or acidic foods and drinks. Some people are more prone to cavities than others.
Your mouth isn’t just your teeth. It’s a whole system, including your teeth, tongue, gums, cheeks, glands, ligaments, joints, bone, and more. When one part of your oral health suffers, the whole mouth is affected. Swollen, itchy, sore, or bleeding gums can be an early sign of a much more serious problem.
We understand how hectic family life can be! At Dundas Valley Dentistry, we can serve your whole family by scheduling multiple appointments side by side. Please give us a call, and we will be happy to accommodate you.
